About 400 buildings, so far, at Fort Bragg have been equipped with smart meter technology, with another 800 buildings on the way in the next few years. Fort Bragg spends approximately $45 million annually on electricity, and the use of smart meters may reduce that number by up to 10%. In 2001, Fort Bragg set public goals for energy sustainability, and since that time all new buildings on the post are built to a standard of sustainability, renovated buildings are made more efficient, buildings receive exterior coating, and solar film on windows to make them more energy efficient. Solar panels are installed over parking lots, providing shade for the cars, and producing enough electricity to light the parking lot. Other measures at the post include shuttle buses that run on biodiesel, and the use of combined heat and power installations which can generate power and thermal energy simultaneously.
